As leaders and achievers it is a topic often discussed in workshops and in casual conversations. People are so busy and feel pulled in so many directions that they find this idea of work-life balance elusive.

Maybe it is supposed to be "life balance". This is one step better as it is not segregating your 50 hour work life to a different planet. But is "life balance" not as much as a lie as work life balance? How can life be balanced? Per definition it is not and probably never will be. Things get thrown at you every day, some are unexpected, some you can plan for but it will ultimately always rock the boat to a greater or lesser degree. So then you are left with just "life" and "life" cannot be managed, although we read untold amount of articles, self help books and magazines to attempt to find the solution.



This doesn't only apply to people who go to work for a company or for someone working for his own business. The fact is, no matter what you do -whether you're in the corporate world or working for your own business, you need to balance your time between work, home/family life and personal life to have a happy, fulfilled life.

Sit down at the beginning of each week and schedule your time according to what needs to get done and what can possibly be postponed. You can also schedule your week to where get more info you spend a few pre-selected nights getting as much work done as possible and the rest of the week spending time on "life" priorities. If it doesn't need to be done that day, maybe you can put it off a day so you can relax with your family, watch a favorite television show, or go for a walk.

After all, it's a rare person these days who has time to get everything done on such a tight schedule and a seemingly endless to-do list. Maybe you can play tennis with your family, or play golf once a week to free up time for work or family.



As women, we are desperate for someone we can relate to--to show us how work-life balance can be achieved in a way we want to emulate. Critics may attack the messenger, but it is the system that's broken. The existing structures for getting recognized on the outside and feeling successful on the inside; for being able to be fully present at home AND at work is in ruins. It appears to be an ALL or NONE paradigm that doesn't have balance front and center at all.

Balance is about strength and focus for any situation in that moment of life. Celebrate yourself, be present and share with others in your life. It does not matter if it involves work, family or friends.
